This week marks the final chapter before UFC 318: Dustin Poirier vs. Max Holloway, a rivalry that began years ago and now comes full circle. This Saturday, the two will meet one last time: Poirier’s farewell dance, and Holloway’s climb up the lightweight ladder.

This fight feels extra special to me, not just as a fan, but because I’ll be watching it during a vacation with my family, probably on a beach somewhere, soaking it all in.

Before the cage door closes again, let’s rewind to 2019 – their epic war for the interim lightweight title. A fight that wasn’t just about gold, but about grit, growth, and greatness.

Let’s go dive!

📚 Backstory: A Tale of Two Journeys

Last week, I dropped a deep-dive into the full history of this rivalry – Dustin Poirier vs. Max Holloway. And honestly, it reads more like a short novel than a blog post.
If you have time, I’d love for you to check it out and let me know your thoughts.

But if you’re short on time, no problem, here’s the TL;DR version:

These two first clashed back in 2012, when both were still young and raw. Poirier walked away with the win via triangle-armbar, a slick finish that quietly sparked what would become one of MMA’s most underrated rivalries.

From there, their paths split:

  • Dustin Poirier lost to Conor McGregor (first time), decided to move up to lightweight, sharpened his weapons through brutal wars, and built his name off pure violence. Wins over Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, Anthony Pettis, and others earned him a shot at interim gold.
  • Max Holloway stayed at featherweight, cleaned out the division, and racked up iconic wins against Cub Swanson, Charles Oliveira, Ricardo Lamas, Anthony Pettis, José Aldo (x2), and Brian Ortega. He became the king of 145 and successfully defended the throne, then decided to chase greatness by moving up to become a double champ.

So in 2019, with Khabib Nurmagomedov suspended, the stars aligned for a rematch: Poirier vs. Holloway 2 for the interim lightweight title.
Two different paths. One collision course. Let’s break down how it went.

Oh, by the way, I should share the fight here, so we can live up the moment again, and you don’t have to hit another Youtube tab, right 😁?

⚔ Round-by-Round Breakdown

Head to the match, and use the numbers, here’s the breakdown round by round for this fire matchup – Max Holloway vs Ryan Reynold (I mean Dustin Poirier, but bro looked exactly like Ryan at that time 😂):

Round 1 🥊: Poirier Sets the Tone

  • Dustin came out firing, landing heavy right hooks that clearly rocked Max early.
  • Poirier dropped Holloway with a well-timed right hook, his significant, that sent shockwaves through the crowd.
  • Max felt back, tried to respond with volume, but Dustin’s power and timing dominated.
  • Poirier continued pressing Max to the fence, threw some heavy shots. But Max’s mythic chin was still unbreakable. The bell rang, round ended.

Dustin Poirier 💎

  • Head: 46 / 105
  • Body: 6 / 8
  • Leg: 2 / 2

Max Holloway 💸

  • Head: 28 / 69
  • Body: 2 / 2
  • Leg: 0 / 1

No grappling involved this round, only a flash moment when Max tried to close the distance but failed. Just full volume strikes in the early round, which is a signal for a fire match of the night.

Big 10-9 round for The Diamond 💎.

Round 2 🥊: Volume vs. Power

  • Max ramped up his work rate, peppering Dustin with punches and elbows in mid-range, aim for more body shot. The arena started screaming for his name like cheer landing team on high school: “HOLLOWAY! HOLLOWAY! HOLLOWAY!
  • Dustin stayed composed, working on his high guard, responding with crisp counter-strikes that kept Max wary.
  • Holloway edged the round in volume, but Poirier’s counters kept it tight, even dropped Holloway one more time in the last minute of the round.
  • The round ended with two warriors faced off before head back to their corner.

Dustin Poirier 💎

  • Head: 29 / 70
  • Body: 1 / 2
  • Leg: 1 / 2

Max Holloway 💸

  • Head: 20 / 68
  • Body: 12 / 21
  • Leg: 0 / 0

Again, no grappling game this round, only a failed takedown attempts from Dustin Poirier mid-round.

This is more even round, but for me, I think Poirier still took the lead 10-9 with his dropped down explosive moment last minute.

Round 3 🥊: Holloway’s Surge

  • Max Holloway, looking more control over the round, throwing volumes at Dustin.
  • Meanwhile, Poirier still looking for open holes and threw bombs. And he managed a good job, but still can’t stun Max.
  • The crowds keep echoing their cheer landing keyword: “HOLLOWAY!“, look like someone has fans favorite that night.
  • Max successfully backing Dustin into the fence last minute, pressing him with a danger moment. But when you fighting with a fighter walked through and survived from danger pressures for many times like Diamond, you know the risk.
  • Dustin, quick, closed the distance and shot for the legs, pushing Holloway back to the fence, until round ended. Poirier survived.

Dustin Poirier 💎

  • Head: 27 / 61
  • Body: 4 / 5
  • Leg: 2 / 2

Max Holloway 💸

  • Head: 44 / 102
  • Body: 8 / 8
  • Leg: 1 / 1

Finally, this round Poirier had to use grappling to buy some time to recover, with 53 seconds of clinch time last minute.

This round kinda close for both, but Holloway got much better volumes, even got a moment that make the fight close to finish.
Meanwhile, Poirier only focus on heavy shots with less volumes, with almost 1 minute of clinch control time. But still isn’t enough to take advantage.
So this round I think we all agree and give 10-9 for Holloway.

Round 4 🥊: Poirier Reasserts

Poirier, knowing that he shouldn’t keep up with Holloway strikes, decide to take the fight to the ground, successful landed a takedown with seconds of control.
Holloway stood up, and again one moment that pressing Poirier with his volumes, everyone though Dustin gonna drop soon. Again, the “HOLLOWAY!!” still strong from outside.
Poirier, used his precision, looked for counters, and he did slow Holloway a little. A knee from Dustin, and Max’s face dried with red blood.
The Diamond continue the grappling game, pushed Max to the fence, dragged him to the ground. Holloway tried an anaconda choke in last seconds. But the bell rang.

Dustin Poirier 💎

  • Head: 29 / 58
  • Body: 4 / 5
  • Leg: 1 / 1

Max Holloway 💸

  • Head: 32 / 78
  • Body: 10 / 11
  • Leg: 0 / 0

Poirier successfully landed 1 takedown and took 1 minute 30 seconds of control time, while Max got only 3 seconds but with 1 submission attempted.

Round 5 🥊: Final Flurries

  • Before the last round start, Poirier stood in the middle of the cage, pointed down – Max’s signature, and Holloway followed. We know that “Let’s throw, bro” vibe.
  • Max kept coming, landing leg kicks and combinations in a late rush. Dustin responded with strong middle kicks and sharp counters, did more heavy hits. The crowd did their part, still “HOLLOWAY-ING!!” echo.
  • Max grappled Dustin, but he instantly reverse back to the fence, look like Dustin is way better in grappling game. Just like that until the end.

Dustin Poirier 💎

  • Head: 22 / 55
  • Body: 3 / 4
  • Leg: 1 / 1

Max Holloway 💸

  • Head: 17 / 77
  • Body: 7 / 8
  • Leg: 0 / 0

Dustin got 1 minute 12 seconds control time, Max only got 3 seconds. With that should be enough for Poirier to win the round, specially striking game is close. 10-9 round for the Diamond.

🥇 What This Fight Meant

This was years of blood, sweat, and scar tissue finally leading somewhere real. Both guys came in with elite striking credentials:

  • Max Holloway, the volume striker, known for overwhelming his opponents with relentless combos.
  • Dustin Poirier, the pressure fighter, with that piston-like right hand and a taste for violence.

They didn’t disappoint. Five rounds of non-stop action. No chess match, no hugging on the fence. Just raw, technical violence. A war that had fans standing up by round 1 and speechless by round 5.

And while only one man could get the belt, both walked away with respect. Their stock only went up. No loss aura, just legacy in the making status.

That night, Poirier got his moment. The interim belt was wrapped around his waist, the reward for years of grinding through the fire. And with it came the ticket to face the undisputed king of the division: Khabib Nurmagomedov.

We already know how that one ended. But that doesn’t erase what this moment meant.
