The main event at UFC 321 left us all uneasy (and frankly disappointed). Tom Aspinall vs. Ciryl Gane ended up in a No Contest after an accidental eye poke from Gane. The internet exploded with rage-typing, blame-games and conspiracy theories.
No one really wants to see a fight end like that — canceled in the middle with no winner. And yes, many fans reacted as if Cyril Gane did it intentionally.
But let’s pull back for a second and remember: some fans get toxic enough to ignore the part where Gane actually checked Aspinall’s real skills instead of just riding hype. Let’s focus on that for this post.
🇫🇷 Cyril Gane exposed Tom Aspinall
So: people were calling Jon Jones a duck for avoiding the young fresh like this guy Tom Aspinall? Not saying I hate Aspinall — he didn’t do anything wrong, just a guy chasing gold. But the “Jones is ducking” narrative? That’s peak fan-bias.
And Gane just did Jones a favour: he went in and tested Aspinall. The “ducking” stigma shifted. Suddenly Aspinall might be the one stuck on the hype train, not Gane.

In the early minutes, Gane looked sharp. Aspinall was slower to start but still looked dangerous. Gane settled in, left Aspinall with a broken nose, bleeding. Then the eye poke happens, the fight stops.
That tells us a few things:
- Gane was prepared and both guy in shape.
- Aspinall’s strength still real, but perhaps not as overwhelming as the hype.
- The ending robbed us of a full drama, but the under-current of danger for Aspinall is now real.
- Jon Jones got his new avatar update on X, a duck wearing an eye patch 🤣
⭐ Other Highlights of the UFC 321 Event
- Mackenzie Dern claimed the Women’s Strawweight belt after out-pointing Virna Jandiroba via unanimous decision.
- Umar Nurmagomedov returned to the win column with a dominant performance over Mario Bautista (30-27 on all scorecards).
- Alexander Volkov, again, picked up a split-decision, this time a win over Jailton Almeida after three rounds of close grappling and striking trade.
- Azamat Murzakanov knocked out Aleksandar Rakic in the first round (3:11) to climb toward the Light Heavyweight Top 5.
⏭️ What’s next?
Since the main event ended with a No Contest, the most logical next move is the rematch between Tom Aspinall and Cyril Gane. Both have reasons to run it back.
For Mackenzie Dern, now that Zhang Weili has vacated (moved weight class), there are meaningful match-ups available. She’ll take some time (family/daughter) and then the next challenger will step up.
In just 3 weeks we head to UFC 322 in New York — which looks like one of the most interesting events of the year: Islam Makhachev vs. Jack Della Maddalena and Valentina Shevchenko vs. Zhang Weili. Not one, but two superfights in a row.
📝 Final Thoughts
This event reminded us that the heavyweight division is still fragile — hype is real, the talent’s there, but a single technical mishap (like an eye poke) can derail everything.
Gane did more than poke — he revealed something about Aspinall’s style and readiness. Aspinall’s hype remains intact, but now there’s real pressure. The rematch isn’t optional — it’s mandatory for credibility.
