1. MOVEMENT & FOOTWORK TECHNIQUES🦶🏻

Movement decides range, timing, angles, and whether you survive or get smoked.
Here are the core footwork techniques used in high-level MMA:

A. Mobility Footwork

👉🏻 L-Step — A quick escape footwork where you step out to the side in an “L” shape. Used to dodge pressure and reset safely.

👉🏻 Circle-Out — Moving around the cage in a circle to avoid being trapped. Basically “running the edge” when someone’s cutting you off.

👉🏻 Shuffle Step — Tiny quick steps to adjust distance without fully committing. Lets fighters stay balanced while inching closer or farther.

👉🏻 Stance Switch Walk — Walking forward while switching stance. Helps disguise attacks and creates new angles.

👉🏻 C-Motion Circle — A wide curved escape path shaped like a “C.” Used to avoid being pinned on the fence.

B. Offensive Footwork

👉🏻 Step-In Entry — A strong forward step to jump into punching range. Great for landing a clean jab or straight.

👉🏻 Blitz Step — A burst of fast steps to rush forward with a combo.
Think Whittaker sprinting in with punches.

👉🏻 Pivot Step — Turn on the lead foot to instantly change angles. Perfect for slipping off to the side and countering.

👉🏻 Cage-Cutting Footwork — Diagonal steps to trap opponents between you and the fence.

👉🏻 Triangle Step — Step left → right → forward in a triangle shape. Creates sneaky angles for kicks and punches, or help you reset the position.

C. Defensive Footwork

👉🏻 Pull Back — Lean back while your feet slide slightly away to avoid punches. Also perfect to bait counters.

👉🏻 Back-Step Exit — A full backward step to reset range. Simple, safe, and creates breathing room.

👉🏻 Switch-Step Retreat — Step back while switching stance. Helps escape pressure without losing balance.

👉🏻 Pivot Escape — Turn your body sharply to escape straight punches. Good for avoiding the cage.

👉🏻 Side-Step — Quick lateral move to dodge forward attacks. Makes aggressive fighters miss and overextend.

2. STRIKING TECHNIQUES🥊

Striking isn’t about throwing hands — it’s about setups, reactions, timing, and angles.

Here are some of the common and high-level techniques elite strikers love to use:

A. Combo & Setups

👉🏻 Feint → Reaction → Strike — Fake something to force a reaction, then hit the opening. The entire game of high-level striking.

👉🏻 Low Kick → High Kick — Attack the legs a few times, then surprise with a head kick. Create temporary react condition → punish.

👉🏻 Body Shot → Head Shot — Hit the body to make the guard drop, then target the chin. Classic boxing tactic to expose the head.

👉🏻 Hand Trap → Angle → Strike — Slap or pin the opponent’s hand, then step sideways and hit. Creates a blind spot instantly.

👉🏻 Level Change Feint → Overhand — Pretend to shoot for a takedown, then throw a big punch over the top. Khabib caught Conor with this trick.

B. Punching Systems

👉🏻 1–2 Layering — Jab → cross → angle out. Simple but dangerous if combine with speed.

👉🏻 3–4 Shot Flows — Long combinations thrown smoothly. The flow level of Max Holloway.

👉🏻 Shift Punching — Switch stance while punching to carry momentum forward. Lets fighters chase opponents with power.

👉🏻 Check Hook Counter — A hook thrown while stepping back or to the side, designed to catch aggressive fighters charging in.

👉🏻 Pull Counter — Lean back to dodge a punch, then fire right back. Perfect counter on the textbook.

👉🏻 Body Jab — A straight punch to the stomach or ribs. Slows the opponent and ruins their stamina.

C. Kicking Systems

👉🏻 Calf Kick — Kick to the lower shin area to kill movement and disrupt pace. Small target, big effect.

👉🏻 Body Kick — Kick to ribs or liver, great for draining energy. Hard to block without hurting your arms.

👉🏻 Teep Kick — A push kick to keep opponents at distance. The “jab by the legs”.

👉🏻 Question Mark Kick — Fake a low kick then whip it up to the head, following a question mark shape. Nasty trick kick.

👉🏻 Switch Kick — Quick stance switch into a hard body or head kick. Fast, explosive, hard to read.

👉🏻 Step-Through Kick — Step forward across your centerline to change angle before kicking. Perfect for open-stance matchups.

D. Clinch Striking

👉🏻 Collar Tie Elbow — Hold the opponent’s head with one hand and slice an elbow in, basic Muay Thai.

👉🏻 Frame → Knee — Use your forearm as a barrier, then drive in a knee, stops pressure AND punishes it.

👉🏻 Underhook Knee Series — Control the arm/torso, then fire knees safely. Grappling + striking hybrid.

👉🏻 Head Positioning — Put your forehead under their jaw to control posture. Invisible but VERY strong.

3. Clinch & Cage Control Techniques🎮

This is where strikers become wrestlers and wrestlers become nightmares.

A. Clinch Fighting

👉🏻Underhooks / Overhooks — Arm battles for control inside the clinch. Winning this decides if you attack or defend.

👉🏻Collar Tie — Grab behind the opponent’s head to control and strike, creates openings for knees.

👉🏻Frame Escape — Use forearms to push away and regain space, go back to distance striking. Strikers love this.

👉🏻Pummeling — Hand-fighting to get inside control. Pure grappling chess match.

👉🏻Wrist Control — Grab and pin the opponent’s wrists to stop their offense, very strong in the fence.

👉🏻Head Position Dominance — It’s important to use your head (literally). Forehead pressure to steer the opponent, small detail leads to huge advantage.

B. Cage Control

👉🏻Pinning Hips to Cage — Trap their hips so they cannot move backward. Cage fence advantage, Khabib special.

👉🏻Cage Wrist Ride — Control the wrist against the fence to stop escape. Islam & Khabib use this constantly.

👉🏻Cage Drag Down — Pull the opponent’s hips off the cage and collapse them down, easy takedown once pinned.

👉🏻Shoulder Pressure — Dig the shoulder into the chin/neck to break posture, makes opponents extremely uncomfortable.

👉🏻Knee Shield Defense — Use the knee to create a barrier vs the cage or in grappling. Good for stopping takedown progress.

4. Takedowns🤼‍♂️

The greatest MMA fighters don’t use single entries — they use chains.

A. Offensive Takedowns

👉🏻Double Leg — Grab both legs and drive them forward. The most famous wrestling takedown.

👉🏻Single Leg — Grab one leg and either run the pipe or lift. Great use against strikers (grab the lead leg).

👉🏻High-Crotch Lift — Lift the leg up high to slam or trip. Simple but effective.

👉🏻Osoto Gari (Outside Trip) — Step behind their leg and trip outward. Powerful and beautiful art.

👉🏻Uchi Mata (Inside Trip) — Lift opponent with inside thigh while turning. Harder, but more explosive.

👉🏻Body Lock Takedown — Wrap both arms around the torso and drag down. Khabib’s bread and butter.

👉🏻Knee-Tap Takedown — Pull upper body → tap the knee to collapse them sideways. Fast and clean.

👉🏻Duck-Under → Back Take — Slip under their arm, circle behind, take the back, one of wrestling’s smoothest moves. Jon Jones beats Cyril Gane with this simple approach.

B. Chain Wrestling

If the first takedown fails, transition instantly to another.
Like “combo punches” but for grappling.

Basic combo:

  • single → high crotch → lift
  • double → trip → mat return
  • body lock → inside trip

C. Takedown Defense

Sprawl: throw legs back + hips heavy.
Whizzer: overhook to stop the shot.
Switch: rotate hips and flip position.
Hip Heist: stand up explosively.
Wall-Walk: climb your back up the fence.

All the tricks to stay on your feet.

5. Ground Game & Grappling⛱️

Elite grappling in MMA isn’t “pure jiu-jitsu” with belt colors — it’s modified for damage, control, and submissions under fire.

A. Top Control Systems

👉🏻Dagestani Handcuff — Trap one of their arms behind their back from top position, kills their ability to escape.

👉🏻Leg Mount Trap — Wrap your legs around theirs so they cannot move. Khabib’s signature.

👉🏻Smash Pass — Use heavy pressure to pass guard. Zero space = easy control.

👉🏻Side Control Pressure — Chest-to-chest pin from one side. Hard to escape, great for GNP.

👉🏻Mount / S-Mount — Sitting on top in control, with hips heavy. Dominant position for finish styles.

👉🏻Back Control — Hooks in + seatbelt grip → ultimate finishing position for RNC.

B. Ground & Pound Mechanics

👉🏻Post → Punch GNP — Post with one hand to stay balanced while striking, makes punches HARDER.

👉🏻Knee-on-Belly — Place knee on opponent’s stomach to pin and strike. Super painful and uncomfortable.

C. Submission Systems

👉🏻Rear Naked Choke — Arm around neck → squeeze (from back control). Number 1 submission in MMA.

👉🏻Arm Triangle Choke — Trap opponent’s arm against their neck → squeeze from side or mount. Islam vs. Oliveira, Arman vs. Hooker.

👉🏻Guillotine Variations — Wrap opponent’s neck while falling backward, frame his hips with knees and push. Very painful submission. Great counter to takedowns.

👉🏻Kimura Trap System — Use kimura grips to sweep or take the back. The chicken wings submission.

👉🏻Triangle / Armbar — Classic submissions from guard. High risk, high reward in MMA.

D. Bottom Game (Escapes & Retention)

👉🏻Shrimp Escape — Move your hips out to create space, shape like a shrimp. Basic but essential.

👉🏻Knee Shield — Use your knee as a barrier to stop pressure. Common in modern MMA, especially from half-guard. Craig Jones’s signature.

👉🏻Technical Stand-Up — The safest way to stand without exposing yourself. Back arm and front leg pose the base, while rear leg step back and stand up with front arm high up to guard the front. Used constantly in MMA.

👉🏻Wall-Walk — Use the cage to stand when you’re taken down. Huge defensive skill and cage as advantage.

6. Advanced Concept Layer (The Invisible Skills)🧰
