If July was relatively quiet, August apparently decided to compensate for it. This month has five weekends, which means the UFC held five events across each Saturdays, traveling from Belgrade to Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Sacramento, and finally Shanghai.

And somehow, 47 of the month’s 64 fights ended before the final bell, approximately around 73-74% finish rate. August also gave us a historic run from Islam Makhachev, another lightweight prospect announcing himself, and one of the biggest bantamweight results of the year.

By the time Song Yadong landed his uppercut on Umar Nurmagomedov in Shanghai, the month had already gone completely off-script.

UFC Belgrade: Medić vs. Rodriguez 🇷🇸

Somehow Broke the Finish Counter

The UFC’s first event in Serbia immediately entered the record books.

UFC Belgrade produced 12 finishes, including 10 in the first round, setting UFC records for both total finishes and opening-round finishes on a single event.

And the hometown fighter closed the madness perfectly.

While we have a reason to believe the main event fight will close with a finish by looking at past record, we didn’t expect that Uroš Medić needed only 30 seconds. Daniel Rodriguez actually opened successfully with a low kick that knocked Medić briefly off balance, but once Medić regained his stance, he fired back with a left hand and immediately overwhelmed Rodriguez with follow-up punches.

Four consecutive first-round finishes have now pushed Medić firmly into the welterweight rankings.

The bigger breakout, however, may have happened one fight earlier.

Navajo Stirling Runs Through a Former Champion

Navajo Stirling stopped former light heavyweight champion Jan Błachowicz in less than three minutes.

That is now three consecutive stoppage victories in 2026 for Stirling, following finishes over Bruno Lopes and Ion Cutelaba. Finishing Błachowicz showed the he belonged higher in the division.

Again, another fight that finished in round 1 of the event.

At 28 years old, undefeated and training at City Kickboxing, Stirling suddenly looks less like a developing prospect and more like a potential future title challenger, except that possibly future matchup is his own teammate and also 205 champion, Carlos Ulberg.

UFC Vegas: Gamrot vs Salkilld 🇺🇸

Quillan Salkilld Submits One of Lightweight’s Top Wrestlers

One week later came perhaps August’s biggest prospect statement: Quillan Salkilld faced Mateusz Gamrot in his first UFC main event.

That matchup looked interesting on paper. Gamrot had spent years around the lightweight division at high level and is considered as a grappling test for anyone who want to pass through top 10. And Salkilld submitted him in the first round, in his own battlefield.

A rear-naked choke at 4:25 ended the fight and immediately changed Salkilld’s position in the lightweight hierarchy.

Beating Gamrot would already have been impressive, but submitting Gamrot was different.

Lightweight has no shortage of dangerous newcomers. However, victories like this accelerate the timeline. Salkilld proved that he can no longer be treated like someone slowly moving through prospects and veterans.

UFC 330: Makhachev vs Garry 🇺🇸

Islam Wins, but Garry Gives Him Problems

UFC 330 carried the biggest stakes of the month: Islam Makhachev defended his welterweight championship against Ian Machado Garry, winning a competitive unanimous decision.

The victory became historic, it was Islam’s 17th consecutive UFC win, moving him beyond Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history. Also marked that he survived in the year of upset, as everyone had saw shocking moments earlier from Ilia Topuria and Khamzat Chimaev.

Yet the fight was much more interesting than another dominant Islam performance.

Garry’s length, movement, defensive grappling and ability to regain space repeatedly prevented Islam from building the prolonged control sequences that normally define his fights.

Islam mixed his entries, continued forcing Garry toward grappling exchanges, landed a highlight knockdown in Round 2 and eventually secured the crucial takedown + back control late in Round 5.

That final round captured the difference between the two fighters.

For Makhachev, beating a long, mobile and technically prepared welterweight strengthens his argument as one of the greatest fighters of this generation. For Garry, losing the decision did surprisingly little damage to his reputation.

Mackenzie Dern Retains Her Belt

The co-main event also went the distance as Mackenzie Dern defeated Gillian Robertson by unanimous decision to retain the women’s strawweight championship.

Two of the best grapplers in the division produced a more tactical fight than many expected, with Dern doing enough across five rounds to remain champion.

Elsewhere in the event, Jalin Turner returned with a 39-second knockout of Kauê Fernandes, while Esteban Ribovics stopped Edson Barboza.

After the fight, Barboza left his gloves inside the Octagon, bringing his remarkable 16-year UFC career to an end. He never became champion, but left some highlight marks throughout his carrer: spinning-wheel-kick knockout of Terry Etim, wars with some of the deepest lightweight generations ever, and almost absurd catalogue of kicking highlights guarantee that his career will not disappear quietly.

UFC Fight Night: Hernandez vs. Rodrigues 🇺🇸

Gregory Rodrigues Survives the Fluffy Pressure Test

Sacramento gave us the rare August main event that actually needed all 25 minutes.

Gregory Rodrigues defeated Anthony Hernandez by unanimous decision, handing “Fluffy” another setback in his attempt to reach the middleweight title picture again.

Hernandez’s entire game revolves around forcing opponents to operate under constant physical pressure. Wrestling exchanges become clinches, clinches become scrambles, and scrambles become another opportunity to make the opponent work.

Rodrigues stayed dangerous through the exchanges, landed the heavier offense and did enough across five rounds to earn the biggest victory of his UFC career.

The result creates another interesting name near the top of a middleweight division that has changed dramatically over the last year.

Besides the main event fight, Reinier de Ridder also made an impressive comeback after last year loses, stopping Roman Dolidze in the first round in his light heavyweight debut.

UFC Fight Night: Nurmagomedov vs. Song 🇨🇳

Song Yadong Finds the Hole in Umar’s System

UFC moved to Asia the final week of August and finished with its biggest surprise: Umar Nurmagomedov entered UFC Shanghai as the heavy favorite against Song Yadong. And less than seven minutes later, he was unconscious on the canvas.

Umar was moving into the strike while Song’s punch was accelerating upward. The uppercut landed cleanly and ended the fight at 1:48 of Round 2.

For Song, this was exactly the victory his career had been missing. He had always looked capable of competing with elite bantamweights, but losses against Cory Sandhagen, Petr Yan and Sean O’Malley kept a ceiling over his title ambitions. Knocking out Umar smashed straight through it.

Song Yadong is now very difficult to keep away from the championship conversation.

For Umar, this one is tough. He was already legit in title picture for year while keep visible active around. This loses is also considered as a knockout of the ladder. And for sure, he’ll have a long way back.

Shanghai Had More Than One Upset

Denise Gomes also produced a major result, stopping former title challenger Yan Xiaonan with an elbow and follow-up punches late in Round 1.

Kai Asakura recovered from his own difficult UFC run with a head-kick knockout of Aoriqileng only 34 seconds into Round 2.

Also several Asian fighters produced major performances on one of the UFC’s strongest Chinese cards in years.

The Shanghai event therefore became a mixture of hometown celebration and divisional disruption.

August may have been the most eventful UFC month of 2026 so far.

• Rodrigues broke through Hernandez’s pressure.
• And Song Yadong broke one of the strongest remaining barriers between himself and a UFC title shot.

The established names were repeatedly forced to defend their positions against fighters moving upward. Five Saturdays later, several UFC divisions look noticeably different than they did when August began.
